1. You mix patterns

Pattern mixing is a dangerous business. Not even celebrity dad Chris Hemsworth can pull off a plaid shirt and camouflage shorts. Keep your patterns within the same family—checkers, stripes, or dots—and then mix up the width or size of the patterns. And stick with the same colour scheme across your outfit. Style tip: It’s easiest to pair shades of grey or blue.

2. You pair running shoes with jeans

We totally understand the appeal of wearing comfortable shoes with jeans—especially when you’re chasing around kids. It’s just that running shoes are made for running—and nothing else. Pick a pair of cool, non-running sneakers instead.

And while you’re at it, take a look at your jeans. You should reevaluate your denim supply every two or three years, paying close attention to fading or tearing at the hems and pockets.

3. Your fit is all wrong

Loose, oversized shirts make you look heavier than you are—and nothing says Benoni rugby dad quite so quickly. It’s always better to go with a slim fit, says Men’s Health Style Director Sandra Nygaard. Wear a button-down that fits snug on your shoulders and chest and leaves you enough room for you to comfortably cross your arms. If you’re wearing the shirt un-tucked, the hem should be straight (not curved) and lie between your hips and butt.
