Get the snip

During the 20th century, nearly 90% of population growth took place in countries classified as less developed by the UN – all countries in Africa, Asia (except Japan), Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania (except Australia and New Zealand). This remarkable development resulted from an unprecedented decline in death rates and caused a dramatic increase in unemployment and carbon emissions because of mass industrialisation. More people equals more consumers. Do your bit for the earth and have that vasectomy.

Obey the speed limit

If, like me, you pay speeding fines through payfine.co.za, you can trace back through your bank account to see how much you paid in the last year. Set that amount as your goal for the coming 12 months, ending say two days before your birthday. When the end date rolls around, any money that you didn’t spend on fines this year gets put towards a present: to you, from you. You’re saving petrol and money, and with a little luck, if we all drive slower, the cops will stop hiding in the bushes and get on with some other sensible law enforcement.

Spring-clean your
cupboard once a year

One of the best things you can do for your personal space and your own peace of mind is to
filter your cupboard. By all means put aside your first team rugby jersey and lucky kilt, but anything else that you haven’t worn in the last year can be given away. Keeping your cupboards filled with piles of unused items isn’t only wasteful, it’s selfish too. And if you’re really struggling with the emotions, sell your unwanted stuff for a nominal amount and buy something tangible like a new tree with the cash.
