Heat things up with the Old Fashioned – the ultimate cool cocktail. “This all-time great is said to have originated in Louisville, Kentucky,” says Neil Roake, who includes it in his must-have book, On The Rocks “Most consider it the first-ever American cocktail. The secret’s in the muddling of the bitters, sugar and fruit, which all adds up to a heady taste.”
MAKE IT…
You need:
- 2 shots bourbon or Scotch
- 1 cube sugar
- 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 slice orange
- 1 twist lemon
- 1 fresh cherry for garnish
Muddle together the sugar, your bitters and just a dash of bourbon or Scotch in a medium-sized thick base glass. You can actually get a glass called an “old-fashioned” glass, which is tailor-made for this dapper drink. Add a couple of ice cubes, a touch of bourbon, the lemon and orange slice, and stir. Add the cherry and the rest of the bourbon. Stir again, serve – and relax.
