Keep your takkies looking (and smelling) like new.

Stop the stench

Fill two nylon stockings up to the ankles with an odour-busting combination of equal parts regular or clumping cat litter (which releases a fresh scent) and baking soda (which neutralises odour). Cut each stocking above the ankle and tie a knot. Store one in each shoe.

Prevent water damage

Stuff wet shoes with just enough balled newspaper to keep the liners slightly taut. The paper will absorb moisture overnight. If salt or water stains appear, insert absorbent cedar shoe trees and wash the shoes off with a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar. Then polish.

Buff suede

For an out-of-the-box look, insert shoe trees for support and then use a nylon-bristle suede brush to sweep the suede
in one direction. To tackle matted areas, take fine sandpaper and use a light back-and-forth motion.

Remove creases from leather

Insert shoe trees and heat an iron to 60 to 80% power. Then unplug it and glide its still-warm tip onto the wrinkle, repeating until the crease disappears. Store your brogues in cedar shoe trees to preserve their shape.
